  • WRITE UP ON SIMILARITY OF JEANETE BARNES' AND JIM DINE'S WORK
Jeanette Barne's and Jim Dine are both contemporary artists. Barnes' work belongs to the expressionism movement whilst Dine is a pop artist. Both artists express their message through rough textures and dark tones. In both Jim Dine's works from 'Ten winter tools' and Jeanette Barne's 'Building the Olympic stadium' there is a lot of energetic strokes and dark tones that make the pieces seem abstract, but at the same time fairly recognizable. The main difference in the two artists' work is the composition, Dine chooses to place the object(s) in the center of the canvas and leaves a fairly large amount of empty space around it. Barnes' work usually leaves no empty space. The message the artists want to convey is quite similar, both want to portray the effects of time or movement. Jim Dine chooses objects that are memorable to him, whilst Barnes chooses objects or locations that will be memorable in the future. The use of tone and lines express this, for example Dine uses lines on the objects that are precise and smooth and surrounds it with rough lines, this makes the object stand out and seem timeless. Barnes utilizes rough lines to show movement and change, for example the drawing of the Olympic stadium includes lines and less tone in key areas such as the crane, this draws the attention of the viewer towards it and allows the crane to act as a leading line towards the stadium.
